Between the Sticks #107

About ten touches.

That was the extent of Sam Johnstone’s Sunday evening at Wembley. Fairly straightforward, it might seem, but in this “international week” edition of Between the Sticks we discuss how the West Brom man still had a job to do against Andorra – even if he wasn’t quite on the ball with the national anthem.

Over in Portugal, Gavin Bazunu very nearly pooped on Cristiano Ronaldo’s party with an incredible penalty stop from the Portuguese captain. Typically, C-Ron took matters into his own hands with two very late record-breaking winners which now mark him as the greatest international goalscorer of all time.

Yann Sommer and Bailey Peacock-Farrell complete a trio of penalty saves, Iran’s Alireza Beiranvand continues to wow crowds with arguably the most epic throw ever witnessed from a goalkeeper and Emi Martinez was at the heart of quite remarkable COVID-related scenes in Argentina’s World Cup qualifier with Brazil.

In the EFL, Nik Tzanev continues to improve as AFC Wimbledon’s No1, James Belshaw racked up eight saves to earn Bristol Rovers a second successive win for the first time since December 2020 and Carl Rushworth helped Walsall nab a point at Bradford.

GKs on Their Way also enjoys its final instalment until January.
